Why study calculus and linear algebra together?  I’ve taught two classes which combine calculus and linear algebra (MATH1014 at ANU, Math 51 at Stanford).  There are lots of reasons to study these topics together, but here’s my favourite:

A new driver will quickly observe

It’s simpler to go straight than to swerve.

We make use of that

And use things that are flat

To study objects that curve.

I wrote the text Differential Vector Calculus which was used in Math 51 at Stanford, and you can find errata for the current version of the text here.

In 2015, I lectured in

MATH1014: Mathematics and Applications 2 (S1) and in 2015 and 2016 I taught

MATH2322/3104/6118 Algebra 1 (S2).

In Semester 1 2015, I also taught a topics course on Modern Knot Theory.

The best place to find course information (lecture notes, resources, assessment criteria) is on Wattle.

For an appointment outside the office hours posted on Wattle, please send me an email at joan-dot-licata-at-anu-dot-edu-au.

Honors Projects:  If you are interested in an Honours project in geometric topology or contact geometry, please email me to discuss possible topics.
