This course will introduce the basic ideas of functional analysis -- the study of linear operators between Banach spaces. There will also be some further results in measure theory.
Summary notes for the course are available, they are a little dated now. Assessment will be by two assignments during the semester and one at the end, together with an "essay" on a topic of individual choice relevant to the course material. Here is a short list of some possible topics. Further details are given in the handout, which also gives a list of reference books. In particular you should note the proposed method of assessing the essay. The handout has been updated to reflect actual assessment arrrangements, except that November 6 should be November 7 because of the new public holiday.
My office hours are 11-1 on Thursday. By the timetable sheet these times are free for everyone in the class. The 11-12 slot is shared with a fortnightly PhD seminar, the 12-1 slot is MATH3325 only. Note that my office door is always open when I am in.
